Hello Fellow Travelers.

April brought showers to my world, literally. Lines of powerful storms stretched from Texas all the way north to my home in Michigan. Early in the month every river in Michigan hit flood stage from all the rain. A small but significant flood happened in our home’s basement as the ground water welled up and tending to that clean up has occupied many of the resources in our household since.

Now we are hitting the growing time here, the red elder trees in the low lying areas are beginning to bloom, with their umbrellas of white flowers. Red buds are sweet and pink along the rivers. Chives, horseradish, nettles, and comfrey are all poking up in the garden, and we are hoping the worst of the frost is over, generally we are clear around the second week of May for some of the more tender babies.

May is officially my summer season jump-start, and I will be heading out to northern Maryland for the Primal Arts Festival for my first camping event of the year. I am so looking forward to spending time around the fire with friends.

Food for Thought and Inspiration:

  • I have been listening to Siv Watkins talk about her work with the animism of the the Smalls and ritual for years now. The blog post Lungs felt timely and deeply personal. As someone struggling with disability and a compromised immune system, talking about partnering with the spirits that I share my body with feels aligned. https://open.substack.com/pub/sivwatkins/p/lungs
  • We don’t often talk about what happens when our spirits send a curve-ball our way, I really appreciated Althaea Sebastiani talking about just that in this blog post. https://www.ladyalthaea.com/every-day-is-magickal/change-at-the-dark-moon
  • The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred By Chanda Prescod-Weinstein. Physics, History, black feminism, politics, queerness, Star Trek, this book has them all and it was a powerful companion reading on a recent adventure. https://chanda.science/

Hello all, Spring is tantalizingly close here in Michigan. The weather has turned, turned back, done a few cartwheels, and thrown a few curve-balls over the last two months. Here, as March is closing out, the snowdrops are almost spent, the wood violets are just getting going. The air is full of calling geese, sandhill cranes, and arguing cardinals. I have heard the spring peeper frogs a few times, between freezes and thunderstorms. As I am writing, the wren in the bush next to my window is...

Hello all, I am landing at home after my adventures teaching with Kenn in Utah, followed by time in Portland, Oregon connecting with heart-family. The Gather, Glean, and Grow workshop feels like a huge success. We were not entirely sure what the weekend would bring, since there were so many new moving parts (teaching together, new material, new venue) and it came together in ways that we couldn’t have predicted. Turns out that we didn’t need to be worried about filling 2 ½ days, all of our...

Welcome to 2026. Congratulations on making it this far. I hope this year brings you all that you need, most of what you want, and some unexpected, welcome delights. January, for me, is a time of contemplation. Starting with the Solstice, where the sun appears to pauses in the sky and the nights are long, I start to catch up with myself. It is a time of orientation, and pausing to collect thoughts. There is time for reflection, thinking about what came before and where I am heading (and if I...
