June Newsletter from HG Wyndell

Hello Fellow Travelers.

Last month took me to the Primal Arts Festival in northern Maryland for the first time. I must say, there is something truly special that happens when you get large groups of people together for ritual, drumming, and fire in the woods for a few nights.

The weather mostly cooperated with us, thankfully it wasn’t as cold or wet as originally forecasted. I have been to other events in the area later in the summer, so adjusting to needing more warm clothes took a bit of doing. Time around the fire, getting to experience Cigars, Boots, and Chocolate again, and being cozy with friends, new and old, was exactly what I needed.

From there on to visiting students and friends Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Road trips, especially those where I can mix a lot of connection and magic in along my route fill my soul. Though it has taken me about 10 days to unpack, wash, and organize everything, about as long as I was on the road.

Summer-like weather is making its way through Michigan in fits and starts. Tomatoes and peppers are in the garden beds, and the herb garden is smelling wonderful. Fresh greens and oyster mushrooms forged from the yard and nearby woods are gracing my plate this morning. Bird migration has brought the warblers through the back yard, with their glorious songs.

Where you can speak up, do it. Call your representatives (federal, state, local), support your local organizations, show up for mutual aid, get creative. In 2020 the Disability Visibility Project updated their 26 Ways to Be In the Struggle, Beyond the Streets and I think it remains a valuable resource for finding ways to be engaged, especially when I am low on resources.

Food for Thought and Inspiration:

  • I am always looking for more mental health and self-caring resources, this mini-zine was both useful and delightfully designed: https://www.traumatizedandthriving.com/shop/p/free-mini-zine-before-you-force-yourself-to-breathe-through-it
  • I am working to build up my skills for dreaming about what is possible, and this month reading Prentis Hemphill’s book What it Takes To Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change The World (2024) for inspiration. https://prentishemphill.com/book
  • I went down a rabbit hole preparing for the upcoming Lore Club on the Merseburg Spells.
    • If you have an interest in historical magic, the Merseburg Echos Project is fascinating, as it traces charms in the Merseburg II lineage through time and space. https://www.mimisbrunnr.info/merseburg-echoes
    • I am fascinated by how inspiration spins out from these charms into modern art, recently the song Bone to Bone by Small Fools came to my attention. You can hear it here.

Hello Fellow Travelers. "Let July be July. Let August be August. And let yourself just be even in the uncertainty. You don't have to fix everything. You don't have to solve everything. And you can still find peace and grow in the wild of changing things.” — Morgan Harper Nichols Not to be too navel gazing and I am deep in contemplations of becoming. July 2026 Hello Fellow Travelers. June was a month for traveling. One of the anchors for this time was the Grief and Eros ritual (https://www.embodymorelove.com/villageritual), I am still digesting the immensity of this experience. It truly feels like one of those “life before this point and life after this point” moments. Moments of my life from my life, including profound experiences of the last ten years wove through in unexpected ways, moments of connection with the humans, profound...

Hello Fellow Travelers. April brought showers to my world, literally. Lines of powerful storms stretched from Texas all the way north to my home in Michigan. Early in the month every river in Michigan hit flood stage from all the rain. A small but significant flood happened in our home’s basement as the ground water welled up and tending to that clean up has occupied many of the resources in our household since. Now we are hitting the growing time here, the red elder trees in the low lying...
